Fiberglass pool installation in Greenville, NC means a factory-molded shell arrives on a truck, gets set into an excavation with a crane or an excavator, and is plumbed, backfilled and filled. Done well it is the fastest inground pool you can get, the smoothest surface to swim in, and the easiest to keep chemically stable. Done badly it is the pool most likely to move on you, and around Pitt County that risk is real enough to talk about first.

The backfill is the whole job

A fiberglass shell weighs a small fraction of what the water inside it weighs. That is fine once the pool is full and the ground around it is settled. It is not fine during installation, and it is not fine if the pool is ever emptied. In our soils — Coastal Plain sand and sandy loam over a seasonal high water table that in the Rains, Bladen and Pantego series sits at or near the surface — an empty fiberglass shell in wet ground is a bathtub toy.

The way you control it is balanced staged backfill. Water goes into the shell and backfill goes around the outside at the same rate, a foot or so at a time, keeping the inside and outside pressures even the whole way. Get impatient, dump backfill to the top and then fill the pool, and the walls bow inward. Fill the pool first and backfill later and a rain event can float it before the sides are supported.

The backfill material matters too. Clean washed stone or a properly graded gravel around the shell drains, consolidates and stays put. Native sand dumped back in the hole and left to find its own level settles for years and takes your deck down with it. That single decision is responsible for most of the sunken coping and cracked concrete you see around older fiberglass installs in this area.

In this part of eastern North Carolina the ground under your yard is sand over a water table that can sit within a foot or two of the surface after a wet week. That is the force that wrecks pools here — not the shrinking clay you read about in articles written for Texas.

Dewatering, and why we ask about your yard's low spot

Before we dig, we want to know where water stands on your property after a heavy rain, because that tells us more about the local water table than any map will. If the hole fills with groundwater overnight, the shell cannot be set on a stable bedding and the install stalls. On those lots we run well points and pump the water table down below the floor elevation for the duration of the install, and we set the shell on a compacted stone base rather than sand.

We also install a dewatering standpipe beside the shell on wet sites — a perforated pipe running down alongside the pool with a removable cap, so anyone can drop a pump in it later and check or lower the groundwater before the pool is ever emptied for service. It costs very little during the install and it is impossible to add afterward.

Ask any fiberglass bid three questions: what material goes in the backfill, is the fill staged with the water, and is there a dewatering pipe. If the answers are vague, the price difference you are looking at is not a discount — it is the omission.

Getting the shell to your back yard

This is the constraint people forget. A fiberglass shell is a single rigid object, commonly 12 to 16 feet wide and up to 40 feet long, delivered on a trailer. It has to get from the street to the hole. That needs a clear path roughly the width of the shell plus working room, and space for a crane or a large excavator to sit.

In Greenville that plays out very differently by neighborhood. The newer subdivisions south toward Winterville and out along Firetower Road and Portertown Road usually work fine — wide lots, open side yards, easy staging. The established streets in Lynndale, Forest Hills, College View and the older blocks near ECU frequently do not, because of mature trees, narrow side setbacks and utilities. Where a shell cannot reach the back yard, a crane can sometimes lift it over the house, which is a real cost line and needs clearance from overhead power. If neither works, gunite or a vinyl liner pool is the honest answer, and we will tell you that on the site walk rather than after you have paid a deposit.

What fiberglass is genuinely better at

  • Speed. Three to six weeks is normal once permits are in hand, versus eight to fourteen for gunite. Some installs go faster.
  • Surface. The gel coat is non-porous. It does not scratch feet, and algae has far less to grip, which means less brushing through a long, warm eastern North Carolina summer.
  • Chemistry. Plaster is cementitious and continually interacts with the water, pulling pH up. Fiberglass is inert. Over an April-to-October season that is a meaningful reduction in chemical use and fiddling.
  • Disruption. Fewer trades, fewer days, less of your yard torn up.

And what it is not good at

  • Shape. You choose from a manufacturer's molds. There is a lot of choice, but it is still a menu.
  • Depth and width limits. Shells have to travel on a road, so width is capped by what can be permitted for transport.
  • Repair visibility. Gel coat repairs are entirely doable but colour matching an aged surface is imperfect.
  • Ground sensitivity. Everything above about backfill and groundwater. This is the shell type with the least margin for a careless installer.

North Carolina requirements for a fiberglass install

Licensing and inspection

Under General Statute 87-1, projects costing $40,000 or more require a general contractor license from the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors. The threshold rose from $30,000 on October 1, 2023. The S (Swimming Pools) classification covers construction, service and repair of pools including plastic-type shells, excavation and grading, decks and walkways, and pumps, filters and chemical feeders — but not direct sanitary sewer or potable water connections and not electrical connections or the grounding and bonding of metal surfaces.

Fiberglass shells still need the equipotential bonding grid required by Article 680. The shell is not metal, but the perimeter deck reinforcement, the ladder and rail anchors, the water itself through a fitting tied into the bond grid, and the equipment all have to be joined together. This is missed on cheap fiberglass installs more than on any other pool type.

You still need the 48-inch barrier with self-closing, self-latching gates, and drain covers meeting the federal Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act standard.

Questions people ask before they build

How long does a fiberglass pool installation take?

Three to six weeks from excavation to swimming is typical in Pitt County, assuming permits are already in hand and the shell is in stock. The shell can go in the ground in a day. What takes the remaining weeks is plumbing, staged backfill, the deck, the barrier and inspections. Shell lead times from the manufacturer are the wildcard and are worth confirming before you set expectations.

Will a fiberglass pool pop out of the ground here?

It can, if it is emptied while the surrounding ground is saturated, or if it was backfilled with material that never consolidated. That is exactly why the install method matters so much in this county. A shell set on compacted stone, backfilled with clean stone in balanced lifts, with a dewatering standpipe alongside it, is a very stable pool. Leave any of those out and you are relying on luck and rainfall.

Can a fiberglass shell fit in my back yard?

That depends on access, not on yard size. The shell is one rigid piece delivered on a trailer, so it needs a clear route wide enough to pass and room for a crane or excavator to work. Wide side yards in the newer areas south of Greenville usually work. Older streets with mature trees and tight setbacks often do not. A crane lift over the house is possible on some lots and is a real cost item. We check this on the free site visit before anything else.

Is fiberglass cheaper than gunite?

Usually yes on the initial build, and the gap narrows over the life of the pool. Gunite carries a larger recurring cost in resurfacing, while fiberglass generally uses less chemical and less labour year to year. Vinyl liner is normally the lowest to install and carries a scheduled liner replacement cost that gunite and fiberglass do not have.

Does the colour fade?

Modern gel coats hold colour far better than shells from twenty years ago, but sun exposure and water chemistry both affect them. Very dark finishes show chalking and fading sooner than mid tones. Keeping calcium hardness and pH in range does more to preserve a gel coat than anything else, and that is easier with fiberglass than with plaster.

Can I put a fiberglass pool in partly, above ground on a slope?

Yes, this is common on lots that fall away toward a creek or ditch, and there are several around the county. It requires a properly engineered retaining structure on the exposed side, not just backfill and hope. It costs more than a flat install but it can make an otherwise unusable back yard work.
