We build pools in Winterville, North Carolina, and it is where a large share of our work sits. Winterville is immediately south of Greenville on NC 11, it passed 10,400 residents at the 2020 census, and the town has been adding people at a rate close to a thousand a year. That growth shows up in back yards. New houses on new lots with new families in them produce more pool inquiries per square mile than anywhere else in the county.

New subdivisions, disturbed ground

Winterville's growth is mostly recent construction on land that was farmed until fairly lately. That matters for a pool in a way most homeowners never think about. When a subdivision is graded, topsoil is stripped, cuts and fills are made to create buildable lots, and the ground behind your house may be several feet of imported or relocated fill rather than undisturbed native soil.

Fill behaves differently from native ground. It settles for years if it was not properly compacted, it holds water in unexpected places, and it can sit over a buried swale that used to drain the field. On a Winterville lot we always want to know roughly when the subdivision was graded and where the low ground used to be, because that predicts where the pool will want to float and where the deck will want to sink.

Water table, Winterville edition

The county soil survey describes the Pitt County picture plainly: well-drained series like Norfolk and Alaga hold their seasonal high water table below five feet, while Rains, Bladen, Pantego and Lynchburg soils have it at or near the surface. Winterville sits on a mix, and the mix can change within a single subdivision.

The practical test is simpler than the map. Where does water stand in your yard after a heavy August downpour, and how long does it take to go? If it stands for a day, we design for groundwater: a hydrostatic relief valve in the floor, a dewatering standpipe alongside the shell, stone drainage under the structure, and a shallower or raised design so the pool does not sit as deep in the water table. If the yard drains in an hour, the job is straightforward.

What people build here

Winterville back yards tend to be regular in shape, generously sized and easy to reach with equipment, which makes this the one part of the county where fiberglass installation is nearly always practical. A shell can get from the street to the back yard on most lots without a crane lift, and that keeps the cost down and the schedule short.

Vinyl liner pools are the entry point for a lot of young families here, and they work well provided the drainage is built in. Gunite comes into play when the design gets ambitious — tanning ledges, integrated spas, raised walls — or when an HOA setback leaves an awkward footprint that a molded shell will not fit.

The HOA question

More of Winterville is inside a homeowners association than is true elsewhere in Pitt County, and HOA covenants routinely impose more than town zoning does. Common restrictions include limits on impervious surface, rules about fence height, material and colour, requirements about where equipment can sit and how it must be screened, and an architectural review process with its own timeline.

None of this is a problem if it is handled at the start. It is a serious problem if a deck gets poured and then fails review. We ask for the covenants during design and design to them, alongside the Town of Winterville's own zoning and permit requirements, which sit on top of the county's.

Sewer, septic and where the pool can go

Inside town limits most of Winterville is on public sewer, which removes the biggest siting constraint we deal with elsewhere. Move out toward the edges — along Reedy Branch Road, out past the Pitt Community College area, toward Ayden — and septic systems become common again. On those lots the drainfield and its designated repair area cannot be built over or driven across, and that constraint often decides where the pool goes before anyone talks about shape.

Timing it around the season

Everybody in Winterville calls in May. That is the worst month to start, because the schedule is already full and you will be swimming in September. The best time to begin is late autumn or winter: the ground is drier than people assume, permitting moves faster, and the pool is finished and filled before Memorial Day. If you are thinking about next summer, the phone call belongs in this year.

We work all of Pitt County — Ayden, Farmville, Grifton, Simpson, Bethel — with no travel charge. The full list is on the service areas page.

Questions people ask before they build

Do I need HOA approval for a pool in Winterville?

Almost certainly, if your neighborhood has one. Covenants commonly cover fence height and material, impervious surface limits, equipment screening and setbacks, and many require architectural review before work starts. Get the covenants in hand at the design stage. Redesigning after a submission is rejected is the most avoidable delay in the whole process.

Is the ground in Winterville good for a pool?

Usually yes, with attention to drainage. Winterville sits on a mix of Pitt County soils, some well drained and some with a seasonal high water table at or near the surface, and newer subdivisions add graded fill on top of that. The site walk answers it. Where the water table is high, the design changes rather than the answer.

Can a fiberglass shell get into my Winterville back yard?

More often here than anywhere else in the county. Lots are generally wide, side yards are open and there are fewer mature trees than in the older Greenville neighborhoods, so a shell can usually be trailered and set without a crane lift over the house. We confirm access on the free site visit.

How far ahead should I book for next summer?

Start the conversation in autumn or early winter. Permitting, design and the build itself all take time, and the demand in Winterville concentrates heavily in spring. A project that starts in November is swimming by May. A project that starts in May is swimming in late summer.
