Spa and hot tub installation in Greenville, NC covers two quite different jobs. One is a built-in spa — usually gunite, usually raised, usually spilling into the pool and sharing its plumbing and heater. The other is a portable acrylic hot tub, which needs a pad, a power supply and drainage, and which people underestimate on all three counts.

Both are worth doing here. Pitt County has a genuinely long shoulder season. October through April is not pool weather but it is very much spa weather, and a spa is the only part of a back yard water project that gets used in February.

Built-in spas: spillover, attached, or standalone

Spillover spa

The most common configuration around Greenville. A raised gunite spa sits at the edge of the pool with a sheet of water falling from it into the main body. It shares the pool's filtration and heater, runs on the same equipment pad, and switches between pool and spa mode with valves — usually automated. The advantage is cost efficiency: one heater, one filter, one pad, one set of plumbing runs. The catch is that it has to be designed in from the start, because the plumbing and the structure are shared.

Attached spa at deck level

Same idea without the raised wall. Cleaner sightline, less visual drama, cheaper. It also keeps the spa from becoming a trip hazard at the edge of the deck, which matters if the pool is used by young children or by anyone unsteady.

Standalone gunite spa

No pool at all. Just a small gunite vessel with its own heater and pad. This is an underrated option in Greenville for people who want the hot water and a modest back yard project rather than a swimming pool, or who have a lot that will not accommodate a pool for septic or setback reasons.

Portable hot tubs: it is the pad that matters

A filled hot tub with people in it weighs several thousand pounds concentrated on a small footprint. On our ground — sandy loam over a water table that in the Rains, Bladen and Pantego soils sits at or near the surface for part of the year — that load does not sit still on a bed of gravel or on a wooden deck that was not designed for it.

A proper pad is a reinforced concrete slab on a compacted base, thick enough for the load, level within a tight tolerance because acrylic shells are unforgiving of twist, and drained so that water leaving the tub during a drain-and-refill goes somewhere sensible rather than under the slab. On a lot with a high water table we build the pad slightly proud of grade so that the surrounding ground can be wet without the tub sitting in it.

Do not put a hot tub on an existing wood deck without having the framing checked. Standard residential deck framing is designed for roughly 40 pounds per square foot of live load. A filled spa concentrates far more than that. This is one of the more common serious mistakes we get called about.

Electrical is the part people get wrong

Portable spas usually need a dedicated 240-volt circuit protected by a ground-fault circuit interrupter, run to a disconnect placed within sight of the tub but not too close — the code sets both a minimum and a practical maximum. Some smaller tubs run on 120 volts and heat far more slowly, which in a Greenville January means an unusable tub.

Then there is bonding. Article 680 of the electrical code requires an equipotential bonding grid around spas and hot tubs just as it does around pools. Metal parts, the reinforcing steel in the pad, the pump and heater, and the water itself through a bonding fitting all get tied together with solid copper so everything sits at the same electrical potential. On a built-in gunite spa the shell steel is part of that grid. This is not decorative. It is the difference between a safe installation and one that can put a current across a person standing half in and half out.

Electrical connections and the grounding and bonding of metal surfaces fall outside the S (Swimming Pools) contractor classification and belong to the electrical trade, which is why a spa installation always involves an electrician and always involves an inspection.

Running a spa in eastern North Carolina

Our winters are mild, which helps. A well-covered spa in Pitt County costs meaningfully less to run than the same spa in the mountains. What our climate does throw at a spa is humidity, pollen and organics. Filters load up fast in April. Covers grow mildew on the underside if they never get cleaned. And leaf tannin from oaks and pines stains acrylic and gel coat if debris is left sitting.

The other local factor is hurricane season. A portable spa is a large lightweight object once drained, and a full one is a large container of water sitting in a yard that may flood. If you are inside the Tar River floodplain, the placement decision is worth taking seriously — the same 20 inches of rain that Floyd dropped on Greenville in 1999 will find a spa pad set in a low corner.

What the rules require

Barriers, covers and permits

A spa or hot tub generally falls under the same barrier requirement as a pool — a 48-inch barrier with self-closing, self-latching gates — unless it has a rigid, lockable safety cover that satisfies the local inspector. That exemption is common but it is the inspector's call, so confirm before you build a deck layout around it.

Suction fittings must meet the federal Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act standard. Older spas with single flat-cover suction outlets are the highest-risk installations still in service.

An electrical permit is required for the circuit and disconnect. A building permit is required for the pad and any structure. Where total project cost reaches $40,000 or more, General Statute 87-1 requires a general contractor license from the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors — the threshold moved up from $30,000 on October 1, 2023.

If the spa serves an apartment complex, HOA or club, it is a public spa under the state rules at 15A NCAC 18A .2500. That means plan review by the local health department, an open-pipe inspection while the plumbing is visible, and an operation permit before use. Those are substantially stricter requirements than a back yard installation.

Questions people ask before they build

Is a built-in spa cheaper than a portable hot tub?

Not usually on the day you buy it. A portable tub has a lower purchase price and a much lower installation cost if you already have a suitable pad and circuit. A built-in gunite spa costs more to construct but becomes far more economical if you are already building a pool, because it shares the heater, filter, pad and plumbing rather than needing its own.

Can I add a spa to my existing pool?

Sometimes. A standalone spa beside the pool with its own equipment is nearly always possible. Tying a new spa into an existing pool's plumbing and heater is harder and depends on whether the existing pad has the capacity and whether the plumbing can be reached without destroying the deck. It is far cheaper to plan it at the start.

What size electrical circuit does a hot tub need?

Most full-size spas need a dedicated 240-volt circuit with ground-fault protection, commonly 50 amps, plus a disconnect within sight of the tub. The exact requirement comes from the manufacturer's data plate. Plug-in 120-volt models exist and heat slowly enough that they are frustrating to use in winter here.

How much does it cost to run a spa in Pitt County?

Less than most people expect, because our winters are mild and the ambient temperature the heater has to overcome is moderate. The variables that actually drive the bill are cover condition, set temperature and how much you use it. A worn or waterlogged cover is by far the biggest avoidable cost.

Do I need a fence around a hot tub in North Carolina?

You need either the barrier or an approved rigid lockable safety cover, and the local inspector decides whether your cover satisfies it. Confirm this before you finalise a deck and fence layout, because the answer can move the fence line by twenty feet.

Can a hot tub go on my existing deck?

Only if the framing was designed for it or can be reinforced. Ordinary residential deck framing is not built for the concentrated load of a filled spa with people in it. Having the structure looked at first costs very little compared to the alternative.
