Pool equipment installation in Greenville, NC is the least glamorous part of a pool and the part that determines what it costs to run, how clear the water is, and how much of your weekend it takes. A beautifully built shell with badly chosen equipment is an expensive disappointment. The reverse is rarely true.

Pumps: variable speed, and it is not a luxury

The pump is almost always the largest electrical load associated with a house that has a pool. A single-speed pump runs at full power whenever it runs. A variable-speed pump runs slower for longer, and because the power a pump draws falls off dramatically as speed drops, running at half speed for twice as long uses a fraction of the electricity.

Federal efficiency standards now effectively require variable-speed technology for most new and replacement residential pool pumps, so the decision has largely been made for you. What still matters is sizing. An oversized pump on undersized plumbing is a common and expensive mistake: it moves water fast through pipe that cannot carry it, wasting energy in friction and shortening equipment life. Getting the pump matched to the pipe size, the filter and the actual turnover requirement is the job.

The other reason variable speed matters here specifically: our swim season is long. A Pitt County pool runs actively from roughly April through October, with the pump turning over water through months of high water temperature and high organic load — pollen in spring, heat and bather load in summer, leaf fall in autumn. That is a lot of pump hours to be paying full price for.

Filters: sand, cartridge or DE

Sand

Simplest, cheapest, most forgiving. Backwash to clean. The trade-off is filtration fineness — sand filters pass smaller particles than the alternatives, so water can look slightly less crisp. Backwashing also dumps a meaningful volume of water, which matters on a well and matters if you are on a septic system because that water has to go somewhere that is not the drainfield.

Cartridge

Finest practical filtration for most residential pools, no backwashing, so no water waste. Cleaning means pulling elements and hosing them, several times a season. Elements are a consumable. In our pollen season a cartridge filter loads up fast in April, which is worth knowing before you choose one.

Diatomaceous earth

The finest filtration available and the most maintenance. DE powder has to be recharged after each backwash and disposal has to be handled properly. Excellent water clarity, more owner involvement.

Heaters, and what our climate actually needs

Greenville does not need a heater to have a summer pool. It needs one to have a spring and fall pool, which is where the value is — a heater realistically adds two months to each end of the season.

Heat pumps are the sensible default here. They move heat from the air rather than generating it, which makes them very efficient, and they work well as long as the air stays above roughly 50 degrees. In this climate that covers most of the season you would want to swim in. They heat slowly, so they suit maintaining a temperature rather than heating a cold pool quickly.

Gas heaters heat fast regardless of air temperature. Their use case here is a spa you want hot in an hour on a January evening, or a pool you use occasionally and want warm on demand. Running cost is much higher per hour of heating.

Solar works well on our sun exposure if you have unshaded roof or ground area with the right orientation, and it pairs neatly with a heat pump. Under the mature loblolly and oak canopy in older Greenville neighborhoods, it often does not have anywhere to go.

A cover does more than a heater. Most heat leaves a pool overnight by evaporation from the surface. A solar or thermal cover cuts that dramatically and is the cheapest heating decision available.

Sanitizing: chlorine, salt, and what our water does

Salt chlorine generators do not make a pool chlorine-free — they make chlorine on site from dissolved salt, continuously and at low concentration. The water is gentler, the smell is reduced and the routine is easier. The generator cell is a consumable with a life measured in years, and it needs the water chemistry kept in range to reach that life.

Two local notes. First, our long hot season means high chlorine demand from roughly June through September, and a salt system sized for a mild climate will struggle. Size up. Second, a lot of properties outside city water are on wells, and well water in the Coastal Plain often carries iron and manganese. Filling a pool from a well without addressing that stains plaster and fouls a salt cell. It is a solvable problem, but it has to be identified before the pool is filled, not after the staining appears.

Where the pad goes matters here

Equipment pads get put wherever is convenient and then flood. Given that Greenville has taken 20 inches of rain from a single storm within living memory, and that our ground saturates quickly, we set pads above the local low point, on a compacted base, with the electrical mounted high and the pad graded so water runs off it. If the property is inside a mapped flood area near the Tar River, the pad elevation is not a detail — it is the design decision that determines whether the equipment survives a storm.

Noise is the other siting factor. A variable-speed pump at low speed is very quiet, but a heat pump is not, and neither is a gas heater firing. Pads set under a bedroom window or hard against a neighbor's fence cause problems that are much easier to avoid than to fix.

Code requirements for equipment

Bonding, GFCI and drain covers

Article 680 of the electrical code requires the equipment to be part of the pool's equipotential bonding grid — pump, heater, and any metal in the pad area, tied to the shell steel or panel structure and the deck reinforcement with solid copper. Pool pump motors require ground-fault protection. These are inspected items and they are also the items most often missing when we open up an older pad.

Suction outlets served by the pump must have covers meeting the federal Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act standard, and single-outlet suction systems require additional protection.

Electrical connections and the grounding and bonding of metal surfaces sit outside the S (Swimming Pools) contractor classification and belong to the electrical trade. Direct connections to sanitary sewer and potable water lines sit outside it too. Where total project cost reaches $40,000 or more, General Statute 87-1 requires a general contractor license from the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors, a threshold that rose from $30,000 on October 1, 2023.

How much can a variable-speed pump actually save?

It varies with pool size, plumbing and run schedule, but the reduction in pump energy is typically large rather than marginal, because power draw falls sharply as speed drops. On a Pitt County pool running a long April-to-October season, the pump is usually the biggest single electrical load tied to the pool, so that is where the savings live.

How long should I run my pump each day?

Long enough to turn the water over and keep the sanitizer distributed. With a variable-speed pump the better approach is longer hours at lower speed rather than short bursts at high speed. In peak summer here – high water temperature, heavy pollen and bather load – that usually means most of the day at a low setting, dropping back in spring and autumn.

Salt system or traditional chlorine?

Salt is easier day to day, gentler on skin and eyes, and more expensive up front. The cell is a consumable you will replace. Traditional chlorine is cheaper to install and more hands-on. In our long hot season, make sure any salt system is sized generously; an undersized generator cannot keep up in August.

Do I need a pool heater in Greenville?

Not for summer. A heater here buys you spring and autumn, realistically adding a couple of months at each end of the season. A heat pump is usually the right choice for a pool because it is efficient at our air temperatures. Gas makes more sense for a spa you want hot quickly in winter.

My well water stains the pool. What can be done?

Coastal Plain well water frequently carries iron and manganese, which oxidise in chlorinated water and stain surfaces and foul salt cells. The fix is to treat the fill water rather than the pool: filter the fill, use a sequestering agent, and keep chemistry balanced. Deal with this before the initial fill if you possibly can, because removing established staining is much harder.

Where should the equipment pad go?

Above the local low point, on compacted base, with electrical mounted high and drainage running away from it. Away from bedroom windows and property lines because heaters are noisy. Close enough to the pool that plumbing runs stay short, since long runs cost energy every hour the pump runs. On flood-prone property near the river, elevation of the pad is the decision that matters most.

Can equipment be replaced without touching the pool?

Yes. Pumps, filters, heaters, salt cells, valves and automation are all pad-side work done with the pool full. It is the least disruptive improvement available and usually the one with the fastest payback.
