We build pools in Grifton, North Carolina, a town of roughly 2,500 straddling the Pitt and Lenoir county line on Contentnea Creek, south of Ayden on NC 11. Grifton is a genuinely old place — the Catechna village site and the Tuscarora history along the creek predate everything else in this part of the state — and it is the town that most obviously organises itself around water. The Shad Festival is built on the creek. So is much of the reason people want to live here.

Water is also why a pool in Grifton needs to be built differently than a pool in Farmville.

Creek bottom means high groundwater

Contentnea Creek drains a large basin and its floodplain is broad and flat. In this kind of terrain the Pitt County soil survey's descriptions of Rains, Bladen, Pantego and Osier soils apply directly: seasonal high water table at or near the surface, poorly drained, runoff slow or ponded. Osier soils in particular are the loose sandy ground along the drainages.

That is the exact condition that makes pools float. When an inground shell is empty and the surrounding sand is saturated, groundwater pushes up on the floor with more force than the empty shell weighs. The pool lifts, cracks and is done. It is not a rare event in bottomland like this. It is the default outcome for a pool built without measures against it.

What we do differently in Grifton

  • Hydrostatic relief valve. A valve in the deepest part of the floor over a gravel pocket, so rising groundwater comes into the pool rather than lifting it.
  • Dewatering standpipe. A perforated, capped pipe alongside the shell so groundwater can be pumped down before the pool is ever emptied for service. It costs very little during the build and cannot be added later.
  • Stone under and around, not sand. Clean washed stone drains, consolidates and stays put. Native sand pushed back in the hole settles for years and takes the deck with it.
  • Raised bond beam. Building the structure partly above grade means the shell sits less deep into the groundwater, and it keeps surface runoff out of the pool during heavy rain.
  • Well points during the dig. On the wettest sites, pumping the water table down below floor elevation for the duration of construction is the only way the work gets done properly.

Flood mapping is a real question here

Contentnea Creek floods. Grifton has taken serious water in the big storms, and the same rain that put roughly 20 inches on Greenville during Floyd in September 1999 and drove the Tar to its record crest hit the Contentnea basin too. Matthew in 2016 and Florence in 2018 followed.

So before design, we check where your property sits relative to the mapped flood zone. Property inside a mapped floodplain carries additional requirements and, on some parcels, real restrictions. Equipment pad elevation stops being a convenience decision and becomes the decision that determines whether your pump and heater survive the next storm. We set pads high, on compacted base, with electrical mounted well above the ground.

Which pool type suits creek-bottom ground

Gunite is often the right answer, because it is heavy, because it can be detailed for uplift, and because a raised bond beam is straightforward to build. Fiberglass works well here provided the backfill is clean stone placed in balanced lifts with the water — it is the shell type with the least tolerance for a careless install in wet ground. Vinyl liner pools need the stone drainage layer under the floor and, on the wettest lots, a sump under the deep end, because groundwater under a vinyl floor washes fines out and produces the soft spots and wrinkles that people wrongly blame on the liner.

Most Grifton properties outside town are on septic, so the drainfield and its repair area get located before anything is designed. Permits come through the town or through Pitt or Lenoir County depending on where the line falls, and we sort that out rather than leaving you to.

Questions people ask before they build

Can you even build an inground pool this close to the creek?

Usually yes, and it takes more engineering than it does on higher ground. A hydrostatic relief valve, a dewatering standpipe, stone drainage, a raised bond beam and well points during excavation handle the groundwater. What decides the answer is the flood mapping and the specific lot, both of which we check before designing anything.

What happens to a pool in a flood?

A full pool generally survives a flood far better than an empty one, because the weight of the water holds it down. The equipment is what gets destroyed, which is why pad elevation matters so much here. After floodwater recedes the pool water is contaminated and has to be treated properly, but the structure is usually fine if it was built with uplift protection.

Should I drain my pool before a hurricane?

No. This is one of the most damaging pieces of bad advice that circulates every storm season. An empty pool in saturated ground floats out of the ground. Leave it full, turn off and if possible protect the equipment, and secure loose items around the deck.

Is a vinyl liner pool a bad choice in bottomland?

Not if it is built for the conditions. It needs a stone drainage layer under the floor, a dewatering pipe alongside, and on the wettest lots a sump under the deep end. Vinyl pools that develop soft floors and persistent wrinkles here are almost always ones built without any of that.
