We build pools in Trent Woods, North Carolina, the town of roughly four and a half thousand adjoining New Bern along the Trent River in Craven County. Trent Woods is low-density by design: large lots, deep setbacks, heavy loblolly and hardwood canopy, and a good deal of river frontage. It is one of the more sought-after addresses in the region, and the price difference between a lot with water frontage and an otherwise identical lot across the road is dramatic.
For a pool project, three conditions define the work here, and they all pull in different directions.
1. Tidal groundwater
The Trent is tidal at Trent Woods. Groundwater on the river side sits close to the surface continuously, not seasonally, and on some lots it is within a foot or two of grade year round.
An empty inground shell in that ground floats. Everything we build here gets a hydrostatic relief valve in the deepest part of the floor, a dewatering standpipe alongside the shell so groundwater can be pumped down before the pool is ever emptied, clean stone rather than native sand for backfill, and often a raised bond beam so the structure sits less deep in the water. On the wettest sites we run well points during excavation to keep the hole workable.
2. Salt in the ground and in the air
Brackish groundwater corrodes reinforcing steel faster than fresh water. On gunite shells that makes adequate concrete cover over the rebar a real structural concern. On vinyl liner construction it argues strongly for polymer wall panels over galvanized steel, which is worth the extra cost here in a way it may not be twenty miles inland.
Salt air shortens the life of everything metal outdoors: rails, ladders, fasteners, light niches, gate hardware, and the equipment on the pad. Material selection is a maintenance decision, not a style one. See equipment installation.
3. The canopy
The trees are why people live in Trent Woods and they are the single biggest practical complication for a pool. Three effects:
Access. A one-piece fiberglass shell needs a clear route from the street and room for a crane or large excavator. On a deeply wooded lot that route frequently does not exist without taking down trees, which is usually the last thing an owner wants. Gunite and vinyl liner construction can be built where a shell cannot be delivered.
Water temperature. A heavily shaded pool stays cold well into June and cools off quickly in September. That is the argument for a heat pump, which works efficiently at our air temperatures and extends the usable season at both ends. It is also the argument for careful pool siting — sun on the water and shade on the deck is the combination that gets used.
Debris and chemistry. Constant leaf and needle fall drives organic load, which drives chlorine demand and feeds algae. That affects skimmer placement relative to prevailing wind, filter sizing, and whether a cover is worth the trouble. It is entirely manageable, but it should shape the design rather than surprise you afterwards.
Root systems and pool structures
Large mature trees near a pool bring roots. Roots seek water and they will find a plumbing line or work along the underside of a deck slab given twenty years. On wooded lots we look at what is within reach of the excavation, discuss which trees are genuinely staying, and route plumbing and design deck details with that in mind. Root barriers are sometimes appropriate. What is never appropriate is pretending the tree will not grow.
Storms
Hurricane Florence in 2018 hit this area directly, with surge coming up the Neuse and Trent. Equipment pads therefore go high, on compacted base, with electrical well above grade and drainage running off. Where the lot allows, siting the pad away from the water is worth a longer plumbing run.
And the rule that matters most: never drain a pool ahead of a storm. Full water weight is what holds the shell in tidal ground.
Permits come through the Town of Trent Woods or Craven County, and work near the water may involve state coastal review. State requirements are the same as everywhere in North Carolina: a barrier at least 48 inches high with self-closing, self-latching gates, drain covers meeting the federal Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act standard, and the equipotential bonding grid required under Article 680. Trent Woods is at the far edge of our service area with no travel charge, and work here is scheduled in blocks alongside New Bern.

Questions people ask before they build
Do I have to remove trees to build a pool in Trent Woods?
Usually fewer than you would expect. Trees in the actual pool footprint have to go, and so do any whose root systems would undermine the structure. Trees that only block equipment access can often be worked around by choosing gunite or vinyl liner construction, which do not require a delivery route wide enough for a rigid one-piece shell.
Will a shaded pool ever get warm?
Not on its own, in a heavily wooded lot. A heat pump is the practical answer here because it is efficient at our air temperatures and can hold a comfortable temperature through spring and autumn. A cover matters even more, because most heat leaves a pool by evaporation from the surface overnight.
Is tidal groundwater really a problem this far from the sound?
Yes. The Trent is tidal at Trent Woods, and groundwater on the river side sits close to the surface continuously rather than seasonally. That means relief valves, dewatering provision and stone backfill are base specification here, and it means never emptying the pool without pumping the groundwater down first.
Will tree roots damage my pool?
They can damage plumbing and lift deck slabs over time, more often than they damage a shell. The work is in planning: knowing what is within reach of the excavation, routing plumbing sensibly, detailing the deck so a slab can be repaired without demolishing everything, and using root barriers where they make sense.
